Until ultimately they know everything there is to know about nothing.That's like, your opinion, man. But just be aware that a specialist learns more and more about less and less. You appear to have a very specialized interest in music (if i'm allowed to call it music?).
perhaps too many lame karaoke performers used them because they didn't have any skill - but don't blame the techlogy for that. It's quite helpful, for example, to recieve a midi file and to have some concept that the track is supposed to be played by drumkit rather than a bass or strings or a flute. it helps in file sharing between different brands of synth. You might prefer to listen to atonal music, but the majority of the planet finds comfort in harmony - in tension and release, not just constant tension. In my opinion, the really cool music borrows the best of the best from all sources, old and new.
